{"id":3313,"date":"2019-01-19T12:53:42","date_gmt":"2019-01-19T11:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/discutafel.nl\/?p=3313"},"modified":"2024-04-30T12:09:14","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T10:09:14","slug":"paradise-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discutafel.nl\/en\/paradise-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Paradise Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><br>In his last series of BBC Gardeners&#8217; World, Geoff Hamilton created his Paradise Garden.<br>In June 2018, I visited a replica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ryton Organic Gardens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The grounds here at Ryton Organic Gardens (listen to our podcasts <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/discutafel.nl\/en\/podcast-29-ryton-organic-gardens-part-1\/\">29<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/discutafel.nl\/en\/podcast-32-ryton-organic-gardens-part-2\/\"><strong>32<\/strong><\/a> about these gardens!) are much bigger than I had imagined. Every now and then, I find myself looking at another nice plot. <br>When I discover the next one, my heart beats one time extra. This is a copy of Geoff Hamilton&#8217;s Paradise Garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geoff Hamilton: the People&#8217;s Gardener<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The late <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Geoff Hamilton (opent in een nieuwe tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/barnsdalegardens.co.uk\/the-barnsdale-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Geoff Hamilton<\/a><\/strong> has meant a lot to me as a hobby gardener and organic gardener. In The Netherlands, only garden nerds know him. But Geoff was extremely popular in the UK. He earned the reputation of the People\u2019s Gardener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He worked at <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Barnsdale Gardens (opent in een nieuwe tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/barnsdalegardens.co.uk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Barnsdale Gardens<\/a><\/strong> in Rutland. You can still visit these gardens. Apparently, one or two original objects from Barnsdale are here at Ryton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geoff Hamilton used recycled materials and rainwater in his gardens. He was ahead of his time in that respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BBC Gardeners&#8217; World<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Geoff Hamilton was the main presenter of <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"BBC Gardeners' World (opent in een nieuwe tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006mw1h\" target=\"_blank\">BBC Gardeners&#8217; World<\/a><\/strong>, up until his untimely death in 1996.<br>For him, organic and eco-friendly was the natural way of gardening. A down to earth style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paradise Garden<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In his last series, Geoff Hamilton created the Paradise Garden. A concept which aims to relax your body and mind. An escape from the busy daily life. With a fine green glasshouse which grows shrubs, climbers and perennials. The rectangular vegetable space in front of it seems not te be in use now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I see a compost bin and a circular construction, like a well. It stores rainwater collected from the roof. The planting is mostly herbaceous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I walk on a windy path. I\u2019m surprised by a flowering Cornus causa, or dogwood. The flowers are white\/pink. Such a stunning sight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Country Garden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a gate, which used to be at Barnsdales, I arrive in the Country Garden. It contains a mixed mainly herbaceous bed, a pond and bog area with wildflowers and pebbles. In the shade of the wall, shade loving plants flourish, like ferns and heuchera. A mixed native hedge is a wildlife habitat and boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The original Paradise Garden &#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Geoff Hamilton. I have good memories of this inspiring man and I\u2019m happy I\u2019ve been able to visit the replica of his Paradise Garden.
