This makes it a top botanical site in the UK. Thanks to an engineer&#8217;s wife in the 19th century, a very rare bulb can still be found on the slopes of the gorge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some rare plant species of the Avon Gorge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/avongorge.org.uk\/wildlife-and-geology\/rare-plant-fact-files\/bristol-whitebeam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bristol whitebeam<\/a> (<em>Sorbus bristoliensis<\/em>)<br>Tree, endemic to the gorge. Its leaves have white, hairy undersides. The berries are orange.<br>There are 21 different species, subspecies and hybrids of whitebeams in the Avon Gorge. That&#8217;s more than any other locality in the world!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bristol onion (<em>Allium sphaerocephalon<\/em>)<br>This plant flowers in July. Magenta flowers gradually fade to greyish pink.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bristol rock cress (<em>Arabis scabra<\/em>)<br>Tiny alpine plant.<br>In spring, its white flowers reach out from crevices on graceful stems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Honewort (<em>Trinia glauca<\/em>)<br>This plant is a member of the carrot family and is pollinated by ants.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/avongorge.org.uk\/wildlife-and-geology\/rare-plant-fact-files\/honewort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Honewort<\/a> was first found in the Avon Gorge in 1562 by the famous botanist <a href=\"https:\/\/historyofparliament.com\/2022\/08\/30\/william-turner-gardening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">William Turner<\/a> (1509-1568). This stunning bridge spans the Avon Gorge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bridge was built to designs based on Brunel&#8217;s, but with changes. Brunel did not live to see the bridge finished. Work was completed four years after his death, in 1864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mrs Glennie<\/strong><br>In 1831, Elizabeth Glennie, the wife of Brunel\u2019s assistant <a href=\"https:\/\/ironandsteam.com\/indexes\/biographical-index\/biographical-index-g\/william-glennie\/\">Willliam Glennie<\/a>, warned the great engineer that the construction of the Clifton Suspension Bridge would destroy rare plants in the gorge, like the Autumn squill (<em>Scilla autumnalis<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Brunel had the bulbs dug up and replanted further along the gorge.
