The gardens have great importance for science, landscape gardening and plant preservation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s in a name<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone talks about Kew Gardens, but the venue\u2019s official name is Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. They comprise 120 hectares. Enough to explore for at least one visit every season \u2026<br><br>The collections of tropical orchids, succulents, tropical ferns, and Australian plants are exceptionally fine. I like the arboretum, too. All perfect for a winter visit! Attention: the gardens close early on winter days, and last entry to the glasshouses is even earlier.<br>Late spring and summer is the perfect time to stroll through the Kitchen Garden at Kew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"color:#32373c;background-color:#500000\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-notice gb-font-size-18 gb-block-notice\" data-id=\"18df4b\"><div class=\"gb-notice-title\" style=\"color:#fff\"><p>December 2023 = Kew Gardens month!<\/p><\/div><div class=\"gb-notice-text\" style=\"border-color:#500000\">\n<p>Discutafel&#8217;s podcaster Ivonne visited Kew Gardens twice.<br>We release a four-part podcast series on these famous gardens in December 2023. Learn about the highlights, listen to some very special sounds.<br>To accompany the podcasts, we publish blogs about Kew Gardens, their history and importance for now and for our future.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-font-size has-medium-font-size\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/discutafel.nl\/en\/tag\/kew-gardens\/\" style=\"border-radius:100px\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More content about Kew Gardens<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Science<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since their creation in 1759, Kew Gardens have made a significant and uninterrupted contribution to the study of plant diversity and economic botany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Landscape gardening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The landscape gardens at Kew, created by celebrated artists such as Lancelot &#8216;Capability&#8217; Brown, reflect the beginning of movements which were to have international influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preservation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1965 Kew has administered a botanical outstation at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kew.org\/wakehurst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wakehurst Place<\/a>. In 1974 the seed bank was established there.<br>In the 90\u2019s, the seed bank endeavour grew to become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kew.org\/wakehurst\/whats-at-wakehurst\/millennium-seed-bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Millennium Seed Bank<\/a> Project to mitigate the extinction of at-risk and useful plants through seed preservation. The site was acquired from the Capel family in 1731 by the Prince of Wales.<br>Princess Augusta, mother of King George III, established a garden for exotic plants within the pleasure grounds at Kew in 1759. Ten years later, it contained more than 3,400 plant species.
