Wood mouse noctarnal shot

As the night falls in your podcaster’s garden, cute little friends come to steal bird food!

Wood mouse

We think this is a wood mouse or Apodemus sylvaticus. The species is native to Europe and northwestern Africa. In our own garden in The Netherlands he’s a rather common resident.

Food

Wood mice are primarily seed eaters. But hey, gardeners, later in the season they might eat a snail or two, as there are less seed available. Or they eat berries and roots. This winter, they discovered the peanut butter jar in our birch!

Furry enemies

Wood mice are most active at night. We keep our cats in during darkness. Somehow they manage to catch a wood mouse now and then during the day.
